Where we Least Expect
Pause
Come, follow the star.
Let God’s light illuminate our path.
Do not be afraid.
In the light of the star, love guides our way.
Come, follow the star.
Listen
He gathered all the chief priests and the legal experts and asked them where the Christ was to be born. They said, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is what the prophet wrote:
You, Bethlehem, land of Judah, by no means are you least among the rulers of Judah, because from you will come one who governs, who will shepherd my people Israel.”
Matthew 2:4-6
Think
The story of the magi has captured our imagination, inspiring hymns, legends, and countless stories. We know them as magi, wise men, and even kings. We paint a picture of three magi on camels, wearing bold colors with lots of bling. Our creative version of the story often distracts us from the story in Matthew.
Matthew talks about two kings, Herod and Jesus. One is a king who rules with power and fear while the other is a baby born in Bethlehem, not a palace. We catch a glimpse of the rule of Jesus when the magi share the prophecy that he is to be a shepherd to the people. One who will not lead with power but compassion and guidance.
Jesus is the king that everyone least expects. He is born in Bethlehem in a stable. It is a reminder that God enters into this world in the places where we least expect. Sometimes God’s people become light or, like Herod, they are blind to the light. Regardless, the light shines bright and God enters the most unexpected places with grace and mystery.
Question to Ponder:
What distracts you from seeing the light of God’s love shining in your life?
Pray
O God, I come to you seeking to be like the magi. May I boldly follow the light of your star to unexpected places. Open my eyes, my heart, and my mind to experience your presence that can bring about incredible transformation for me and for the world. Amen.
Go
God has called us to move into a new year as bright manifestations of light and love.
May we be epiphanies ourselves, illuminating God’s presence in the world.
Today and always shine bright.
