Following the Star

Pause

Come, follow the star.

Let God’s light illuminate our path.

Do not be afraid.

In the light of the star, love guides our way.

Come, follow the star.

Listen

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in the territory of Judea during the rule of King Herod, magi came from the east to Jerusalem. They asked, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We’ve seen his star in the east, and we’ve come to honor him.”

Matthew 2:1-2

Think

This is the story of Epiphany, the magi from the east searching for a child. They have observed the star and want to come and worship him. Did they not read the context clues? In a land where there is a king, you do not go around telling everyone that you are looking for someone new to worship.

The magi knew that this event was significant, and they took a long journey to figure it out. Did they know that this was God-with-us? Were they aware of the prophecy of a messiah? We do not know. What we know is that the magi were paying attention. Are we? Take a deep breath. Slow down. We are invited to take this journey with the magi with curiosity. Take notice of all that is holy in the day. Observe light and love. Give thanks to God.

Pray

It is often our habit to turn aside, stumble over, and even reject experiences and encounters that we later understand to be holy.

God of light and love, give me curious eyes and an open heart to see the gifts this day and every day. Quiet my mind so that I can pay attention to your Spirit that moves around me with comfort and joy. Amen.

Go

God has called us to move into a new year as bright manifestations of light and love.

May we be epiphanies ourselves, illuminating God’s presence in the world.

Today and always shine bright.
