Following the Star
Pause
Come, follow the star.
Let God’s light illuminate our path.
Do not be afraid.
In the light of the star, love guides our way.
Come, follow the star.
Listen
Let it be so, because he delivers the needy who cry out, the poor, and those who have no helper. He has compassion on the weak and the needy; he saves the lives of those who are in need. He redeems their lives from oppression and violence; their blood is precious in his eyes.
Psalm 72:12-14
Think
As we begin a new year, Psalm 72 can be heard as a challenge or a charge to a new way of being in the world. In the early church, it was a charge used at ceremonies where the community rehearsed what it believed God was calling them to do.
The petitions could be in order of priority, but notice the effect of the psalm when read aloud. It is an intensifying spiral and overlapping of attributes painting a clear picture of who we are called to be as the people of God.
We are people called to notice. Called to respond. Invited to join God in doing the work of justice for those born without privilege and those who struggle daily.
In this season of light, may we join in this important work God is doing so all of God’s children can flourish and thrive.
Pray
Holy God, I find myself at the beginning of another year. I live in the uncertainty of tomorrow but help me be ready for whatever 2025 might bring:
If I am to speak up, help me to speak with boldness.
If I am to work for justice, help me to work with brave humility and deep kindness.
If I am to shine light, remind me to renew my faith through worship and prayer.
If I am to be an epiphany, may I work to shine the light and love of God into every corner of this world.
I pray in the night of the one who is my light, Amen.
Go
God has called us to move into a new year as bright manifestations of light and love.
May we be epiphanies ourselves, illuminating God’s presence in the world.
Today and always shine bright.
